When my son saw my outfit today he said "mom you look like one of those torero people" he didn't like it, but I did. It's all about the little vintage bolero, the rest of the outfit was pretty simple, basic tee, black skirt, red lips and we're ready to go. You know, I really like dressing up on Sundays to go to church, it's one of my favorite days. However, the dress code at my church is very casual and almost everyone wears comfy clothes, except for the elder people. I've noticed I tend to overdress, the thing is, I'm very shy and I dislike standing out, no one really cares, but there is part of me that wonders whether I should dress more casual. I'm not wearing jeans to church any time soon, but it's been on my mind. Have you been in a similar situation? What are your thoughts? Hope to read your opinions. Have a great week everyone!

Yes, church has become very casual. You look pretty. Keep dressing up!
Oh my gosh Shey! YES! I was just thinking the same thing today! Our new church here in Raleigh (we recently moved) is VERY casual and I often feel completely overdressed. I thought today that maybe I should try to dress down some to maybe fit in. But then I thought, "This is church! Where else should it be completely safe for me to be myself?" I LIKE to dress up and am probably a little overdressed everywhere I go. But it's me. I'm not putting on airs, it's just how I'm most comfortable. So, I'm going to just keep doin' my thang...and believing that my new church family will appreciate that about me! Hugs to you pretty girl! you look gorgeous in black! ~Serene
Thank you ladies! =) You are right Serene, I'm not dressing up to call attention to myself, it's just my style. Everyone at my church is very kind and I often get compliments, but there are times when one feels the need to conform. Thanks for your comments.
Be true to yourself and others will see the wonderful person you are
If were still a church-goer, I would dress up.The above commenters are right! And you look sooooo lovely.
There's been a movement among churches lately (mine included) to make it more casual. I think the thought is to make it more appealing to those who would not normally come to church, that they can "come as they are". I've worn jeans to church before but I actually prefer dressing up a bit when I can. Probably because as a stay-at-home mom I don't dress up much for the rest of the week! But I also think it's nice to worship God looking your best, too! PS: Love the gold detail on the jacket. You totally pulled it off! :-)
Kathy I agree and I think everyone should dress as they feel comfortable, I'm not criticizing their dress code, the only thing is I don't like feeling that I'm overdressed all the time. I do like it when people dress up for church, the older ladies always do and it's nice to see them with their Sunday best, it's also nice to see that people feel comfy in their clothes. =)
SO - I think it looks gorgeous :)
Sunday is my one day to dress up dress up, although I have office wear, but it's not like dressy dressy.
You look Great!
I agree that few people seem concerned with their sunday best these days, but it makes you happy, so I think you should continue to dress your best on sunday, and on every day.
Chic on the Cheap
Keep dressing up when you want to and go casual when, well, you want to. You know UPC churches; the problem we have is not being dressed up enough! I tend to feel overdressed for work and I've often thought about blending in, then I decided to keep dressing the way I want.

it's not called 'sunday best' for no reason! dressing up for church is fun! XO
I love the bolero - it's so unique and cool! I feel the same way, I dress how I want, but I also feel like it's makes me stand out, which can make me feel uncomfortable at times!
I'm usually the most dressed up person at my church, but I'd rather be overdressed than under-dressed! I have even been told that I have inspired others to dress up more too! So keep at it and maybe you'll inspire some people too.
I'm always overdressed, however I'm a 30 something college student. Most of my classmates can't even bother to brush their hair let alone put on "real" clothes. By real I mean something other than pajamas. Kudos to you for going against the grain of excessive casualness! Which is a real problem in this country. Love the bolero by the way.
Don't dress down one bit just because everyone else has lowered their standards and level of attention. We ladies have got to work together if we're going to bring classy back! If you feel you're standing out, that's great.
Well said Amanda!!!
Would you wear your everyday clothes if you were going to meet the President? Nope. I go to church to worship God (not that you can't elsewhere--but it is time set apart), so why NOT dress appropriately for church? My teen girls read your blog and look up and admire you and I'm sure many others do too. Keep dressing in your beautiful, unique style--at church or elsewhere! :-)
Dear Restitchme, thank you so much! I definitely agree with you, I'd be excited and running fast to pick something nice for the president, but for the King of Kings I definitely want to look my best! =D Such a great reminder. =) !hank you and your daughters for checking my blog, I'm honored and humbled by your comment. =)
Hi Shey, I'm from New Zealand and I have often said that if I didn't have church to wear exciting, fun, elegant, dressed up clothes then I would have nowhere to wear them. I say it as a joke, to kind of justify my own clothes, but yes, I wonder how many around the world today would think like you! Even the ministers are dressing down? Liked what someone above said, "Be true to yourself". What your inner Christ self generates, be true to it:) Hugs xx
Dress for yourself, Shey! If you're wearing what you like, then GO FOR IT!!!! I love the way you dress!!!
I've found myself waaay overdressed at places like the theatre or the opera. To me getting dressed up for special occasions is first and foremost a way of showing respect to whatever that special occasion is: it's not called a special occasion for nothing, right? ;)
This bolero is so awesome! As per dressing up/being over dressed... I think it speaks to a different time when clothes werent created to be "thrown away". And wheather anyone likes it or not, I think it says something about a person who spends time, effort, and care to dress in a polished way.
